ACTION ALERT! ACTION ALERT! ACTION ALERT!
SB900l is comparable to SB720 of the 2006 session, a bill we worked to
defeat. Again, the citizen initiative process is under fire. The League of
Women Voters of Florida supports the citizens' initiative process and is
opposed to this bill and any others that would make it more difficult for
citizens to be involved in their government (See Study & Action, pp. 8-9).
In SB900:
There are stringent requirements for paid petition gatherers.
A revocation process is created in the bill. Instead of creating a process
where a petition signer would contact the elections supervisor in order to
remove his/her signature from a petition, people involved in a
"counter-campaign" could distribute forms for citizens to revoke their
signatures. It would be difficult to know how many signatures an
organization really has collected; it would also create a cottage industry
in the petition revocation process.
All signatures collected would have to be turned into the supervisor of
elections within a thirty day period in order to be valid.
Please contact members of the Judiciary Committee asap and ask them to vote
"NO" on this bill.
